First Mesozoic Record of a Parasitiform Mite: a Larval Argasid Tick in Cretaceous Amber (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae)

چکیده
A larval argasid tick (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae) is described from a single specimen preserved in amber from New Jersey. The amber is dated as Turonian, 90Ð94 mya, and thereby doubles the age of the oldest fossil in the mite order Parasitiformes. The specimen shows general characteristics of the genus Carios, but is unique because of its pattern of dorsal setae, featuring a double row of posterior marginal setae. Earlier hypotheses that Carios arose after the isolation of South America are challenged but not rejected by the discovery of this fossil. Salvaging these hypotheses seems most compatible with dispersal on birds, an idea consistent with the presence of a small feather in the same outcrop in which the tick fossil was found.

Description of a new species of bat-associated argasid tick (Acari: Argasidae) from Brazil.
A new species of argasid tick (Acari: Argasidae) is described from immature and adult specimens collected from several localities in Brazil. A complete morphological account is provided for all postembryonic life stages, i.e., larva, nymph, female, and male. Ornithodoros cavernicolous n. sp. is the 113(th) in the genus. Morphologically, the new species shares common features, e.g., presence of ...
متن کاملVariation in genome size of argasid and ixodid ticks.
The suborder Ixodida includes many tick species of medical and veterinary importance, but little is known about the genomic characteristics of these ticks. We report the first study to determine genome size in two species of Argasidae (soft ticks) and seven species of Ixodidae (hard ticks) using flow cytometry analysis of fluorescent stained nuclei. Our results indicate a large haploid genome s...
متن کاملPhylogeny of parasitiform mites (Acari) based on rRNA.
Acari (mites and ticks) form one the most diverse lineages of arthropods, but basal relationships in the group are still poorly understood. The current study addresses this issue for one of its two main lineages, the order Parasitiformes. Relationships are examined at the subordinal and infraordinal level using complete 18S and partial 28S nuclear rRNA sequence data. Most currently recognized l...
متن کاملDetection of human blood in the bat tick Carios (Ornithodoros) kelleyi (Acari: Argasidae) in Iowa.
The argasid tick Carios (Ornithodoros) kelleyi Cooley & Kohls is a common ectoparasite of bats and has been found in massive numbers in homes with associated bat colonies in eastern Iowa. This tick feeds nearly exclusively on bats in nature. Several inhabitants of infested homes complained of "bug bites" at night while asleep that may have resulted in erythematous, edematous, urticaric skin les...
متن کاملOrnithodoros guaporensis (Acari, Ixodida: Argasidae), a new tick species from the Guapore River Basin in the Bolivian Amazon.
The soft tick Ornithodoros guaporensis n. sp. (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae) is described from larvae and adults. Morphological analysis and 16S rDNA sequences are provided. Adults were collected from a rocky fissure inhabited by bats located in the Amazonian forest in north-eastern Bolivia (Beni Department) close to the Guapord River. Larvae were obtained from eggs laid by females collected in th...
